What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic Violence is a system of behaviors used to maintain power and control over a partner.

Intimidation
Isolation
Emotional Abuse
Economical Abuse
Sexual Abuse
Using Children
Using Coercion and Threats
Using Male Privilege

These behaviors are more powerful because they are reinforced by the threat or use of physical abuse.

If you are battered...

There is help available. There are people that you can turn to for support and assistance. You are not alone.

No one deserves to be beaten or hurt. You did not make the other person hurt you. Violence is a choice.

If someone you know is being beaten you can help. Listen to what she says and believe her story no matter how strange or awful it may sound. Respect the danger of her situation and keep what she has to say confidential. Let her know she is not the cause of the violence and she has choices. Allow her to make her own choices and decisions. Support her during this time even if you do not agree with her decision she may make. Do not give up on her or stop giving her support.

2 to 3 million in America are battered each year.
95% of all spouse abuse cases are women hurt by men.
Battering occurs among people of all races.
Battering tends to increase and become more violent over time.
Many batterers learned violent behavior growing up in an abusive family.
Nearly 65% of male children who witness domestic violence become batterers and 40% of girls become victims.
